Uganda Releases 2024 Primary Leaving Exam Results.

KAMPALA, Uganda - The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has released the 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results. The exam tested nearly 800,000 students in math, English, science, and social studies.

More students took the PLE in 2024 than in 2023. There were 797,444 students in total, up 6.4% from 749,347. Girls made up 52.5% of test-takers.

The PLE also had more students with special needs in 2024: 3,328, an increase of 25.5% from 2,652 in 2023. Most special needs students were boys. 108 prison inmates also took the test.

Students did best in math and English. About 17% showed strong skills in these subjects. But in science and social studies, only around 14% did very well.

Most students had medium-level skills in math, English, and social studies. They could remember facts but struggled with complex thinking, and many had trouble with science and English.

As in past years, girls did better than boys in English. But boys outscored girls in social studies, science, and math. Yet more girls ended up in lower grade levels, likely because more girls took the test.

UNEB said the test was secure, and no questions were leaked ahead of time. However, some school officials tried to help students cheat, especially in math. 68 people were arrested, and 12 were convicted.

Prisoners and special needs students did well on the PLE. At one prison, four inmates got top scores, and 36 got the second-best grade. Special education students beat the national average, and most earned the second-highest grade.

UNEB thanked the education ministry, security forces, and others who helped give the test. Students can get their full results online or at UNEB offices. They should tell UNEB if any name spellings or birth dates are wrong.

The 2024 PLE had some good news but also some issues. Students struggled with complex thinking, and cheating is still a problem. UNEB said schools should focus more on skills like critical thinking and problem-solving.
