Ugandan soldiers shot and killed a woman they believed was planning a bomb attack at Kalerewe market on Sunday. The military shared news about the incident on social media and said bomb experts were checking the area for dangerous explosives. Officials did not tell anyone who the woman was or confirm she actually carried bombs with her. They also kept quiet about what target she might have chosen for her attack. Army leaders promised to release more details later about how they stopped her.
A photo from the scene showed a motorcycle standing up with a dead body lying next to it. A laptop bag sat nearby on the ground as evidence of what happened. Military bomb specialists searched the market area to make sure no other explosives were hidden there. The incident took place during daytime hours when many people would have been shopping.
This attack happened just three weeks after another bombing attempt near a religious shrine during Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3. Two attackers died during that earlier incident when their explosives went off accidentally. Security forces believe both women belonged to a rebel group called Allied Democratic Forces that operates from Congo. This group works with Islamic State terrorists and has bombed Uganda several times during 2021.
