UK Leader Seeks Trade Deal and Ukraine Pledge at White House

Trump said he might let the UK avoid trade taxes during the UK leader's Washington trip. The President talked about making a big trade deal with Britain.

Sir Keir came to the White House hoping to talk about Ukraine and trade. He gave Trump a letter from King Charles asking Trump to visit Britain again. This second royal visit would be special because US presidents usually only get one.

Trump said meeting the King would be great. He called King Charles a wonderful man and said yes to the visit.

The two leaders spent 30 minutes talking to reporters in the Oval Office. Trump did most of the talking about Ukraine deals and the Chagos Islands plan.

Before flying to America, Sir Keir said he would send British troops to Ukraine as part of a peace plan. But he said Ukraine needs US help to stop Russia from attacking again.

Trump said a minerals deal he plans to sign with Ukraine might help protect the country. He thinks Russia would stay away if US workers were there.

Someone asked Trump if he still thinks Ukraine President Zelensky is a dictator. Trump seemed surprised and said he respects Zelensky, who visits Washington on Friday.

The UK plans to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius but keep using Diego Garcia as a military base. Trump was fine with this idea.

After meeting in the Oval Office, they held a press event, during which Trump talked about quickly completing a US-UK trade deal. Sir Keir focused on working together on AI instead.

Sir Keir said the UK and US should not make too many rules for new tech. He said these two countries helped create last century's big inventions and can do it again.

He mentioned AI might cure cancer and called this a moonshot for today.

Trump has said he wants to put 25% extra taxes on goods from the EU and on all steel and aluminum entering America.

When asked if Sir Keir tried to stop these taxes for Britain, Trump joked that Sir Keir worked hard at it.

Trump added that friendly countries like theirs might make a trade deal where taxes aren't needed.

Sir Keir argued that US-UK trade is already fair and balanced.

British leaders have wanted a free trade deal with America since Brexit. Trump talked about a big trade deal during his first term, but talks stopped because of farming and tech tax issues.
