UN drama in New York as Africa claps back on sanctions

African leaders demanded United Nations reforms during the 80th General Assembly in New York. Multiple presidents called for the removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe, Cuba, and Venezuela. Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah requested equal African representation on the Security Council. She described these economic measures as violations of the UN Charter that perpetuate global injustice.

Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized that the organization must adapt to current worldwide challenges. He stressed the need for structural changes to address conflicts, climate disasters, and growing inequality. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the weaponization of trade by powerful nations. The September 22-30 summit operates under the theme Together we are better and addresses pressing global issues.
