US Travel Ban Rumors Put Gambia on Alert

The Gambian government hasn't heard anything official about a new US travel ban yet. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the Information Minister, told The Standard this fact yesterday. News reports claim the Trump team wants to limit travel for people from many nations, including The Gambia. The plan might affect up to 43 different countries split into three levels.

The Gambia sits on what they call a yellow list with 21 other nations. These countries would need to fix certain problems within 60 days or face tougher rules. The main issues for The Gambia include not telling the US about who travels there, having weak passport systems, and letting banned people buy citizenship. The US hasn't publicly announced these ideas yet.

An unnamed US official warned the list could change before final approval. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others still need to sign off on any new rules. This plan resembles what President Trump did during his first term in office when he banned travelers from seven mainly Muslim countries. That earlier ban underwent many changes until the Supreme Court declared it legal in 2018.

When asked about this situation, Dr. Ceesay said, "We have heard about it, but the US Government has not officially notified the Gambia Government yet. If they do, we will provide a detailed response to that effect." The Gambian officials appear to be waiting for direct communication before taking any action or making further statements about the possible travel restrictions.
