Veteran Media Personality Clare Ekiyaasiimire, Known as Clare Choppa, Dies at 53

Clare Ekiyaasiimire passed away Sunday at Devine Mercy Hospital located in Rwebikoona, Mbarara City. The popular Western Uganda media figure reached age 53 before her death. Doctors report pressure-related complications caused her passing. People knew her best as Clare Choppa throughout her career. She spent more than 25 years working in the media business.

Radio listeners loved her unique voice and professional approach to broadcasting. Clare connected deeply with audiences across Western Uganda during her long career. She held positions at Radio West, Endigyito FM, and Greater African Radio. Her most recent job was General Manager at Greater African Radio. Patrick Kabagambe, her husband, hosts the morning program Owakutangaheeru on Radio West.

Clare tried to win the Mbarara City Woman MP seat during 2021 elections. Ritah Atukwasa defeated her in that political contest. She recently announced her intention to compete again as an independent candidate for 2026 elections. Clare worked as a trained teacher before entering the radio industry. She maintained her dedication to both education and broadcasting throughout her professional life.

Coleb Bwongyereirwe, a journalist colleague at Greater African Radio, shared memories about Clare. He described her as both a mentor and close friend who guided his career. Clare hired him and provided advice from his first day at the station. He expressed wishes for her soul to rest peacefully. The family will announce burial arrangements at a later time.
