Village elder hacked to death at night vigil

Police are looking into the brutal killing of a 54-year-old village elder in Kisumu. Bad guys with machetes attacked Joseph Otieno Odhiambo during a late-night memorial service last Friday. The attack happened around 11:20 pm at Peres Owuor's vigil in Saema village. The attackers hacked Odhiambo's head multiple times, killing him right there.

Assistant Chief Junior Onyango Omollo explained that Odhiambo worked security at the event when the attack happened. Omollo said people from the village know exactly who did this terrible crime. Upper Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Orina Dawin visited the crime scene with other officers and called the murder awful. He promised the killers would face serious punishment.

The reasons behind the attack remain unclear, but locals point to two people from nearby Kagak village as likely suspects. Nobody has caught these suspects yet. Dawin asked police to add more night patrols around the area to make it safer. He said the entire village mourns this senseless death.

Officers from the Nyakach Directorate of Criminal Investigations took Odhiambo's body to Nyabondo Mission Hospital. They plan to run an autopsy as part of their ongoing investigation. The killing has left residents shocked and scared as police hunt for the attackers who remain on the loose.
