A bunch of folks died in a prison riot in Mozambique on Christmas. It happened at the maximum security prison in Maputo, the capital city. The big boss of the police, Bernardino Rafael, said 33 people were killed and 15 got hurt. He also mentioned that about 1,530 prisoners managed to escape during all the chaos. But they've already caught 150 of them.
Mozambique has been having a rough time lately. There's been increasing unrest since the election in October. The party that's been in charge forever, Frelimo, won again. But the opposition groups and their supporters say Frelimo cheated to win.
Rafael thinks the protests outside the prison encouraged the inmates to riot. But the justice minister, Helena Kida, told a different story on a local TV station called Miramar. She said the trouble actually started inside the prison and had nothing to do with the protests outside.
Rafael explained that the fights after the riot led to 33 deaths and 15 injuries near the prison. But it's not clear exactly who died or got hurt.
There had already been some other incidents of unrest in Mozambique. That's because the country's highest court confirmed on Monday that Frelimo definitely won the election. Just a day later, Mozambique's interior minister said at least 21 people had died in those incidents.
