Tinotenda Kadewere created the first scoring chance just two minutes after kickoff. Gerald Takwara scored for Zimbabwe during the 9th minute when he kicked a loose ball near the goal. The early goal gave Zimbabwe confidence as they controlled most of the first half.
Niger fought back hard but could not break through Zimbabwe's defense early on. Issa Djibrilla hit the goalpost during the 23rd minute with a strong shot. Jonah Fabisch stopped another Niger attack during the 30th minute with a smart defensive play.
