WatchOS 26 Kills Support for Older Apple Watches

Apple announces iOS 26 and watchOS 26 at Monday's WWDC event on June 9. The company changes its naming system from numbers to years for all software. WatchOS 26 replaces what would have been watchOS 12 under the old system. The new names help customers and developers understand software releases better. Apple keeps the same features despite changing how it labels updates.

WatchOS 26 works with Apple Watch Series 6 and all newer models. Private sources shared compatibility details through social media accounts. The update supports the same devices that currently run watchOS 11. Apple Watch Ultra models and second-generation SE devices receive the new software. Series 7, 8, and 9 watches also qualify for the upgrade.

The software brings major visual changes across Apple Watch interfaces. Apple wants all its devices to share similar design elements. WatchOS 26 borrows transparent effects from Vision Pro headset software. Glass-like visual elements appear throughout the watch operating system. Productivity features improve how people use their Apple Watch daily.
