Wike says new FCT rules curb land speculation

FCT Minister Wike just approved major changes to land rules. The new system starts April 21 and has strict deadlines for everyone who wants land in Abuja. Land Administration Director Nwankwoeze told reporters that these rules will make things better for real investors. People must pay all their fees within 21 days of getting land offers. They also need to send back signed acceptance papers during this time.

Anyone who misses these deadlines automatically loses their offer. Late payments will not count at all. Landowners must start building within two years of receiving their rights papers. This aims to prevent people from holding empty plots. The government wants more development happening faster across the capital city.

Area Council land papers can become official titles if people pay everything within 60 days after being notified. Of over 261,000 documents submitted for checking since 2006, only 2,358 became fully legal. Mass housing estate residents can apply for proper titles beginning April 21. The director believes these changes will cut down on illegal deals. He says genuine property owners deserve secure papers showing they truly own their land.
