Wike wanted Fubara gone but Tinubu saved Rivers

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike admitted he wanted Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara completely removed from office. He believes President Tinubu helped Rivers State avoid serious problems by suspending Fubara for six months instead. The president declared a state of emergency during this period after ongoing political fights in the state. Wike told reporters in Abuja that citizens should appreciate what Tinubu did because the situation was becoming dangerous.

Wike explained that legal issues complicated matters since the Supreme Court ruled money cannot go to local governments without proper elections. The court also stated that nobody can access state funds without budget approval. These rulings meant government services might have stopped working entirely. Wike mentioned he traveled to London specifically to talk with Assembly members who were upset about the situation. As a politician opposing Fubara, Wike admitted he wanted stronger action against the governor. He emphasized that creating difficulties for Fubara was part of normal political competition between rivals.
