Wits SRC suspends Musawenkosi Mavuso amid rape and harassment allegations

The Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command at the University of the Witwatersrand has demanded the immediate suspension of Student Representative Council member Musawenkosi Mavuso following rape allegations that emerged on November 10, 2025. Campus authorities, including the Gender Equity Office and Campus Protection Service,s began investigating claims against the SRC Officer for Innovation and Community Development, though no formal complaint had been filed with university security or police by that date.

Both the youth organization and student council moved swiftly to address accusations that surfaced alongside additional harassment claims, with the SRC confirming Mavuso's temporary removal pending investigation outcomes. The case highlights persistent gender violence concerns at South African universities, where more than 1,000 incidents were documented nationwide in 2024 and surveys indicate approximately 10 percent of female students experience assault annually.

University officials examined security footage and consulted investigation teams but found no documented reports covering the alleged November 7 incident date. Student leaders emphasized their commitment to supporting survivors while calling for transparent handling of the matter during the national 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender violence.
