YouTube coughs up $24.5M to shut Trump up

YouTube will pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by former President Donald Trump and other plaintiffs after the platform suspended his account following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The agreement was reported by the Wall Street Journal based on court documents. YouTube becomes the final major social media company to resolve legal disputes Trump filed in 2021 after his accounts were suspended.

The settlement allocates $22 million to the Trust for the National Mall to fund a White House ballroom project. The remaining $2.5 million will be divided among other plaintiffs, such as the American Conservative Union and author Naomi Wolf. Meta Platforms settled a similar case for $25 million earlier this year, and X reached a $10 million agreement in 2023. YouTube suspended Trump in January 2021 over concerns about potential violence incitement.
