Zimbabwe banks on gold to beat dollar blues

Zimbabwe's Reserve Bank aims to stabilize the economy through new monetary policies. Deputy Governor Innocent Matshe spoke at a mining conference in Victoria Falls recently. He said mining companies must help the country stop using American dollars. The new Zimbabwe Gold currency needs support from miners to succeed. Banks plan to complete this change before 2030 arrives.

Mining companies brought 1.4 billion dollars into the country during early 2025. This amount increased from 1 billion dollars during the same period last year. The money helps support Zimbabwe's new currency system nationwide. Government officials use these funds to pay bills and build emergency reserves. Local businesses are increasingly accepting the Zimbabwean gold currency these days.

People currently use the new currency for 36 percent of their transactions. This number grew from 26 percent when the currency started last April. Point-of-sale machines across Zimbabwe enable people to spend the new currency easily. The central bank maintains sufficient foreign currency reserves to back the entire local currency. Officials work to control rising prices and help the economy grow simultaneously.
