Zimbabwe Pays $3M to White Farmers Over Farm Seizure

Zimbabwe kicked off a massive payback plan for white farmers whose land vanished decades ago. The government shelled out $3 million as part of a massive $3.5 billion compensation deal hammered out in 2020. Farm seizures that rocked the country between 2000 and 2001 crashed the economy and pushed Western nations away from Zimbabwe's doorstep.

Robert Mugabe championed the farm grabs that sparked an international uproar. Emmerson Mnangagwa stepped up after taking power through a 2017 coup and started patching things up with global partners. The current payment covers 378 farms with a total allocation reaching $311 million. Farmers will receive cash for land improvements but not the actual ground they once worked.

Foreign-owned farms jumped to the front of the compensation line with payments rolling out since January. Zimbabwe hopes to clear its massive $21 billion debt and patch up its battered global financial reputation. Hired advisors are working overtime to restructure the country's financial mess and open doors to potential economic recovery.
