Zimbabwe Women Ditch Virginity Way Before 20

Most women across Zimbabwe start having sex before age 20 according to new research. The government study found 69 percent of females become sexually active during their teenage years. Men begin sexual relationships later than women across the country. Health experts collected information from over 11,000 families between December and May.

Women typically have their first sexual experience around age 18 and half years. Men wait until nearly 20 years old before becoming sexually active. The research shows females start having sex almost one year before marriage. Government workers want to use this data to help young people make better health choices.

Early sexual activity creates problems for teenage girls at school. Many students drop out when they become pregnant or catch diseases. Parents and teachers need better ways to talk about safe sex practices. The study helps officials understand what happens with young people across Zimbabwe.

Health agencies want to provide more birth control and education programs. Young girls need protection from unwanted pregnancies and infections. Government leaders plan to create new policies based on these survey results. The information guides decisions about healthcare and education spending for the next several years.
