A Zimbabwean man faces six long years behind bars after police busted him with a hot car. Joseph Kungwengwe thought he could drive a stolen Toyota Corolla Cross across the border without getting caught. The 37-year-old criminal made a huge mistake when he tried to smuggle the fancy SUV from South Africa into his home country. Mokopane Regional Court judges showed no mercy when they handed down the harsh sentence. Police nabbed Kungwengwe on December 29 last year near a busy toll plaza.
Smart cops from the anti-smuggling squad received a hot tip about the stolen vehicle heading toward Beitbridge border post. The team tracked the SUV as it cruised along the N1 highway toward Zimbabwe. Officers cornered Kungwengwe near Zebediela Toll Plaza and arrested him on the spot. The Toyota Corolla Cross had been reported missing from Brakpan in Gauteng province months earlier. Kungwengwe probably thought he had found easy money but ended up losing his freedom instead.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised her officers for stopping another car theft operation. The Limpopo police chief said her teams work hard to catch criminals who steal expensive vehicles. Another similar bust happened recently when officers caught 31-year-old Mikael Mlambo with a different stolen Toyota Corolla Cross. Mlambo also tried to smuggle his hot car toward the Beitbridge crossing point. These cases show how criminals target popular SUV models for cross-border smuggling schemes.
