Reddit new API changes may force Apollo and third party clients to shutdown

After Twitter shut down third-party apps earlier this year, it seems that Reddit is poised to eliminate or significantly diminish the usage of popular third-party clients with its updated API pricing changes to access the site via non-official mobile applications.

Say goodbye to:
  • BaconReader
  • Boost
  • Infinity
  • ReddPlanet
  • Relay
  • RIF (Reddit Is Fun)
The end is near.

Once Reddit released its own official app on Apple iOS and Google Android mobile platforms, the writing on the wall became clear for some time. Also, their own marketers and salespeople view it as a utopia, as they can push ads, recommend new things to people, and collect vast amounts of data.

Reddit, Inc. probably doesn't care about third-party clients quitting. If you aren't viewing ads you aren't making Reddit money, just costing them money.

I think the decision to charge ridiculous amounts for the Reddit API is a way for them to move everyone to their app, mine data on their users, and serve the ads they want. As much as I would like to believe this would be reversed I truly believe this is an intentional move to clear competition.

C
By Reddit's argument, Reddit should be paying a majority of its revenue to end users, because ultimately Reddit is dependent on the community for all of its content, a large portion of the moderation, etc.
