16 Face Charges in Ashulia Killings and Burning

Prosecutors slammed formal charges against 16 suspects who killed and torched six people during last year's mass protests in Ashulia. The paperwork hit the International Crimes Tribunal-2 desk Wednesday morning after investigators dug deep into the horrific case. Prosecutor Saimum Reza Talukder confirmed the charges landed right on schedule. The tribunal had originally wanted the charges submitted July 2nd but gave lawyers extra time to prepare. Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder leads the three-judge panel handling this explosive case.

Police have grabbed seven suspects out of the 16 people named in the charges. The arrested crew features some heavy hitters from law enforcement ranks. Former police bosses Md Abdullahil Kafi and Md Shahidul Islam sit behind bars alongside other officers. Detective inspector Md Arafat Hossain also faces the music along with lower-ranking cops. Constable Mukul rounds out the group of detained suspects.

The nightmare unfolded August 5th last year when police gunfire allegedly killed six young protesters in Ashulia. Officers reportedly stuffed the bodies into a police van and lit them on fire afterward. One victim was apparently still breathing when they doused him with gasoline and burned him alive. Lawyers filed the case with the International Crimes Tribunal on September 11th. They branded the killings as crimes against humanity that shocked the entire nation.
