25-year-old woman fights for life in croc attack

A young woman aged 25 from Nkonke village faced death after a crocodile bit her at the end of March. She lived in the Tondoro constituency in the Kavango West region. The police chief from that area, Raimberth Muronga, said the attack really happened. The crocodile jumped at Kayuru Masanga from the front as she washed clothes in the river. It hurt her right leg badly. She stays at Nankudu State Hospital right now but remains stable.

Lucia Ngave, the mother of Masanga, said the attack scared everyone in their family. Her daughter went to the river with other kids. They planned to clean school clothes and bathe the children there. Ngave heard someone yell for help from the river area. She asked her husband if he heard it as well. He said yes, and they ran to help. They brought axes and tools with them. When they reached the spot, they saw their daughter bleeding a lot. The crocodile had left by then.

They carried her home that Sunday, taking almost an hour to reach their house. They waited until the next day to bring her to the hospital because they had no cars around. The mom says her daughter still feels much pain. She cries most time because of her deep, open wound. She suffers greatly, and the family feels helpless as she stays in the hospital.

Ngave points out they have no water pump nearby. The family asks the government to drill one for them. This would prevent people from having to go to the dangerous river for daily water needs.
