39 crushed at Vijay Karur rally in Tamil Nadu

Authorities charged three senior officials from Tamil actor Vijay's political organization after a deadly crowd crush killed 39 people during a campaign event. The tragedy struck Saturday when thousands gathered for a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally in Tamil Nadu state, leaving more than 50 others wounded. Police targeted party leaders Bussy Anand, Nirmal Kumar and VP Mathiyalagan for investigation. Officials said the crowd exceeded 20,000 people despite permits allowing only 10,000 attendees.

The three-decade cinema veteran launched his party last year ahead of upcoming state elections. Chief Minister MK Stalin pledged 1 million rupees to each victim's family while appointing a retired judge to examine the incident. Video captured Vijay distributing water bottles to collapsing supporters from atop his campaign vehicle. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the deaths deeply tragic.
