ASUS XG Core packs a throttled RX 9060 XT into a 75W GPU dock

ASUS XG Core packs a Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB of GDDR6 into a small external GPU dock, but its 75W power limit sets it apart from desktop cards. The device links to a PC through USB-C at speeds of up to 40Gbps.

At just 144 × 117 × 39mm, the box targets slim laptops, mini PCs, and handheld gaming systems. It gives machines with no room for a graphics card a way to use a separate GPU without a large enclosure.

Under the hood, ASUS lists 2,048 stream processors, a 128-bit memory bus, and 20Gbps VRAM speed. Those specs may sound familiar, but the clock speeds tell a different story.

In its default setting, the GPU can reach 1,600MHz. Switching to OC mode raises that limit to 1,620MHz. Both figures sit well below what full-size RX 9060 XT cards can achieve.

And that matters for speed. The 16GB memory pool may help with local AI models and creative apps, but extra VRAM does not make up for lower GPU clocks or a tight power budget.

ASUS also claims 406.3 AI TOPS with INT4 sparse math. For gaming, the firm says certain AAA titles can run above 60fps at 1440p. Neither claim has independent test data or clear test settings behind it.

Port options are fairly simple. HDMI 2.1b and DisplayPort 2.1a handle video output, while one USB-C connection carries data. A separate USB-C input supplies power to the dock.

Here's the catch for laptop users. A USB-C socket alone does not mean a PC can run this device. The host needs the right interface and driver support, and the 40Gbps link may limit some tasks.

Performance can also change based on the game, app, or system in use. A GPU outside the PC has to deal with data moving across that link, unlike a card plugged into a desktop motherboard.

For buyers, the appeal is clear. A small box offers dedicated graphics, a large VRAM pool, and direct monitor outputs. Yet it is a low-power take on the RX 9060 XT, not a full desktop card in a smaller shell.

Until third-party tests arrive, the real gaming and AI gains remain uncertain. The key question is how much useful speed ASUS can get from that 75W design.
