Barzani of Kurdistan squeezes Baghdad for oil cash

Kurdistan Region officials restarted oil exports Saturday morning after a suspension lasting more than two years. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani emphasized that future relations with Baghdad must respect constitutional agreements and protect regional financial rights during meetings with Iraqi National Congress representatives.

The first crude oil shipments moved through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline at 6:50 AM on September 27. Officials confirmed exports of 190,000 barrels per day would begin immediately, with additional volumes planned for domestic refineries under the new tripartite agreement.

The export halt started in March 2023 following an international arbitration ruling. Economic analysts predict the resumption will generate over three million dollars daily for Iraq and help resolve delayed salary payments in the Kurdistan Region.
