Barzani recalls when Kurdistan voted to lose Kirkuk

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani marked the seventh anniversary of the 2017 independence referendum on Thursday. He praised the vote as a demonstration of Kurdish courage and unity through social media. The Prime Minister honored President Masoud Barzani, the Peshmerga forces, and participating citizens. He described the referendum as a triumph of Kurdish national will.

The referendum asked Kurdistan Region citizens whether they supported independence from Iraq. Voters delivered overwhelming support with nearly 93 percent choosing yes. The Kurdistan Regional Government organized the vote under President Masoud Barzani's leadership. Kurdish people expressed their century-long desire for self-determination.

Baghdad and neighboring countries strongly opposed the independence vote. International communities feared regional destabilization would follow the decision. Iraqi federal forces launched military operations against the disputed territories afterward. Kurdish aspirations suffered major setbacks when forces recaptured strategic areas.
