Harare City partnered with Helcraw Water to launch smart water meters across the capital. Officials from both organizations met last week to finalize supply, installation and commissioning plans. The collaboration addresses digital billing systems, Morton Jaffray treatment plant upgrades and water infrastructure improvements. The enhanced facility will boost daily production from 350 megalitres to 520 megalitres. Pipe replacement programs will strengthen citywide distribution networks.
Mayor Jacob Mafume explained that prepaid water meters offer cost advantages over traditional systems. Helcraw executive Farai Jere confirmed that project equipment and vehicles are ready for deployment. The initiative eliminates estimated billing complaints by allowing residents to pay for actual consumption. Previously underserved areas will gain access to reliable water supplies through this modernization effort. Jere emphasized the project's alignment with national development goals for universal water access.
