Gaming fans got major news at Anime Expo when CD PROJEKT RED teamed up with studio TRIGGER again. The duo revealed they are making Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 after saying no to more episodes back in October 2022. This new anime series will have 10 episodes and takes place in the same world as Cyberpunk 2077. Netflix will stream the show but nobody knows when it drops. The announcement completely flips what the companies said before about ending the story.
Bartosz Sztybor returns as the main writer and showrunner for the sequel series. He won a Hugo Award and worked on the first Edgerunners show. The story moves away from David and explores new characters in Night City. Sztybor promises viewers will see themes of redemption and revenge like never before. He teams up with character designer Kanno Ichigo and screenplay writer Masahiko Otsuka.
The original Edgerunners became a massive hit when it launched in September 2022. Critics gave it perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes with 100 percent fresh ratings. The show brought new life to Cyberpunk 2077 after its rocky launch. CD PROJEKT RED released game updates at the same time as the anime aired. Player numbers jumped and people started loving the game again.
The studio might not make new Cyberpunk 2077 content for this sequel anime. They are busy working on The Witcher 4 right now. Fans will have to wait and see if gaming content matches the new show.
