Devastating Fire Destroys Entire Bakau Compound

Fire Burns Down Home in Gambia's Bakau Area.

A huge fire left many people homeless when it burned down their house in Bakau Newtown early Thursday. The fire started at 2:30 in the morning, forcing people to run from their rooms.

Fatou Korita lived there and saw what happened. She heard someone yell about fire and rushed to wake up the children in her room. The flames began in the ceiling and spread fast through the building.

Most people were sleeping when smoke filled the air. They woke up to the noise of the fire, but no one was in the room where it started, making it hard to stop the flames early.

The fire team came an hour after people called for help, said Ousman Marr, who watched the event. By then, the fire had already burned most of the house.

People thanked young neighbors who helped fight the fire. They want the local council and government to help find new homes for the families who lost everything.

"We need help," Marr said. He asked the government, aid groups, and kind people to support those who lost their homes.
