Students at a Dhaka University dormitory painted over the hall's official name. The Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall union replaced the founding leader's name on the front gate with that of Shahid Osman Hadi late on a Saturday night. They also plan to swap murals inside, according to the union's general secretary, Ahmed Al Sabah.
The union vice president, Muslemur Rahman, said this was an act of revenge for Hadi's recent killing, which they blame on present-day supporters of Mujib. He cited anger at the interim government's failure to catch those responsible. A student representative claimed around eighty percent of residents signed a petition supporting the change, originally wanting to name the hall after poet Kazi Nazrul Islam before settling on Hadi's name. The union had previously asked university officials to rename the dormitory, accusing them of ignoring the demand. Student groups plan to protest at the vice chancellor's office, demanding that all halls named after Mujib and his family be renamed.
