Dune Awakening Drops on Arrakis May 20

The new Dune game hits your screens on May 20. Funcom just put out a video that shows off the massive planet Arrakis. They call it Dune: Awakening and it marks the first time players can team up in an open-world survival game based on this famous sci-fi setting. The game takes inspiration from Frank Herbert's books and those big blockbuster movies from Legendary Entertainment. You can watch their latest feature, Exploring Arrakis - Secrets of the Desert, right away.

Arrakis has way more variety than you might expect from a place covered in sand. Your character carries a scanner that finds resources nearby, and you can attach similar tech to your vehicles. If you need to see more land, just climb up high and launch a survey probe. This fills big chunks of your map with details about cool stuff like crashed ships and research labs. The game looks pretty amazing, as shown in their recent Beauty of Arrakis video.

The game features a massive area called the Deep Desert, where high-level players face serious dangers. Giant spice clouds rise, and deadly storms tear across the landscape. These dangerous weather events actually reshape the entire map each time they pass through. They bury old landmarks and uncover new places to explore. After storms clear out, smart players rush to make fresh maps they can sell to others at the Exchange.

Checking out all these sandy areas matters a lot in Dune: Awakening, but that's just one piece of what you can do. Funcom plans to release another video soon about fighting mechanics in the game. Remember, Dune: Awakening arrives May 20. You don't have to wait until then to start playing around—Steam already offers the Character Creator & Benchmark Mode for download. Jump in early to design your character before launch day, and you'll receive an exclusive Frameblade Knife skin as a bonus.
