Elementaita crash piles misery on Nakuru highway

Thirteen people died and three sustained critical injuries when their matatu collided with a lorry near Elementaita along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway Sunday. Emergency responders transported the wounded passengers to nearby medical facilities for treatment. This fatal incident occurred one day after an ambulance crash killed six people at Kimende on the same roadway. The victims included a patient, family members, medical staff and the ambulance driver.

Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority reports that Nakuru County experiences among the nation's highest annual road fatalities. The Northern Corridor highway accounts for nearly 10 percent of the country's 4,000 yearly traffic deaths. Authorities blame reckless driving, excessive speed, driver fatigue and vehicle maintenance issues for frequent accidents. Police have launched investigations while officials demand stricter traffic enforcement measures.
