Police charged former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey with serious criminal offenses. The 32-year-old Ghana international faces five rape charges and one sexual assault charge. The alleged crimes happened between 2021 and 2022 according to Metropolitan Police. Three different women made complaints against the footballer. His Arsenal contract expired on Monday after four years with the London club.
Detectives began investigating Partey after receiving the first rape report in February 2022. The charges involve two rape counts against one woman and three rape counts against another woman. A third woman made the sexual assault complaint. Police continue supporting all three women who came forward. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy leads the investigation team.
Partey completely denies all criminal charges against him. His lawyer Jenny Wiltshire says he cooperated fully with police during their three-year investigation. The footballer wants to clear his name through the legal process. He cannot make public comments because court proceedings have started. Westminster Magistrates Court will hear his case on August 5.
Arsenal paid Atletico Madrid 45.3 million pounds for Partey in October 2020. He played 35 Premier League games last season and scored four goals. The Gunners finished second in the league behind Manchester City. Partey also appeared 12 times in the Champions League before Paris Saint-Germain knocked Arsenal out. He made 130 total Premier League appearances and scored nine goals for the club.
