FDLR Leader Gakwerere Arrested by M23 in Eastern DRC

M23 rebels caught the top FDLR leader. They gave him to Rwanda. His name is Ezéchiel Gakwerere. People also call him Sibo Stany or Julius Mokoko.

The rebels found Gakwerere dressed as a Congo army man. They caught many other FDLR fighters with him. They all went to the Rwanda army at the border crossing.

The Rwandan army said they got these FDLR men from M23. The head of FDLR and his team were caught during fights in East Congo, which Rwanda said proves FDLR works with the Congo army.

Rwanda plans to prosecute these men for their past actions. The list of men includes one top leader, one middle leader, and twelve regular fighters.

Rwanda claims these FDLR men worked with Congo forces and other groups. Some FDLR people ran away to places like Walikale and Lubero. Others hide where M23 has power.

Gakwerere did bad things in 1994. He helped plan attacks on the Tutsi people and was a boss at the ESO army school.

One of his worst acts was on May 17, 1994. Many Tutsi people died at a church near Butare that day. He led that attack.

A world court said Gakwerere helped kill the last Queen of Rwanda. He got orders from Captain Nizeyimana to kill Queen Rosalie Gicanda. He also helped kill a man named Jean-Baptiste Habyarimana, who led Butare.

This arrest hurts FDLR's power. Their top leaders can no longer run the group. The fact they wore Congo army clothes makes people think Congo helps FDLR.

Rwanda will put these men on trial. They face charges of killing people and causing problems in the area.
