FFIX artist Itahana exits Square Enix after 30 years

Another legendary dev just bailed on Square Enix right as remake rumors started rotting. Toshiyuki Itahana finally walked away from the studio after a three-decade run defining the visual style for the Final Fantasy series. The artist famous for designing characters in Final Fantasy IX confirmed his resignation became official late last year. He plans to operate as a freelance illustrator instead of remaining a company man. His farewell note expressed a sense of accomplishment after finishing tasks related to the recent twenty-fifth anniversary of that specific game. Itahana claimed readiness for fresh challenges while soliciting support from the community.

This exit worries the community since chatter regarding a Final Fantasy IX Remake keeps sounding worse. Leaks indicate the unannounced title suffers from development trouble or might actually be dead. The creator stated his anniversary work is finished, yet that phrasing leaves room for interpretation. Gamers do not know if he finished assets for the revival or if the project fell apart completely. The corporation stays silent on the matter while its veteran talent heads for the door.
