First Lady lauds health workers in cancer fight

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa praised Zimbabwe's healthcare workers as essential to fighting cancer at a breast cancer training conference in Harare on Friday. Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi delivered the speech at the event organized by Cancer Care Network Zimbabwe for medical professionals from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana.

More than 7,000 Zimbabweans receive cancer diagnoses annually, with breast and cervical cancers most common among women and prostate cancer leading in men. Mnangagwa operates mobile clinics through her Angel of Hope Foundation, which provide free screening in remote areas, and has expanded telehealth services while supporting families through nutrition programs and education assistance.

The government modernized hospitals and expanded screening programs under the National Cancer Prevention and Control Strategy. Health officials said collaboration with international partners improved prevention, detection and treatment access. Medical professionals at the conference discussed multidisciplinary approaches to improve early detection and patient care across southern Africa.
