Five dead, six injured in building collapse in Karachi's Lyari area

A deadly building crash killed five people and hurt six others in Karachi's Lyari neighborhood. The old five-story apartment building came tumbling down around 10:10 this morning. Rescue teams pulled bodies and wounded victims from the wreckage. Pakistan Rangers and Edhi Foundation workers keep digging through the mess. About 100 people lived inside the building when it fell apart.

President Asif Ali Zardari felt sad about the deaths and told his people to help the families. He ordered rescue teams to work faster and give the best medical care to hurt victims. Edhi Foundation helpers think eight to ten more people remain stuck under the concrete and steel. The rescue workers called the building worn out and dangerous. They keep searching for survivors buried deep inside.

The crashed building stood for more than 30 years in the Baghdadi section of Lyari. City officials had warned residents to move out because the structure looked unsafe. Some people who lived there disagreed with the danger warnings. Karachi faces building collapses all the time because of cheap materials and bad construction work. Government leaders formed a special team to find out what caused this disaster and who made mistakes.
