Five die in smash on Fort Portal Kasese highway

Five people lost their lives when a medical school van crashed with a passenger bus on Saturday night. The deadly accident happened at 10:50 pm on the Fort Portal-Kasese highway. Vincent Twesige from Rwenzori West police said both vehicles hit each other on a narrow part of the road. The impact made the Toyota Hiace van flip over many times before it stopped upside down. The van belonged to Fins Medical University from Fort Portal City.

The Isuzu bus was carrying many passengers when the crash occurred. Everyone on the bus survived without serious harm. The bus driver only had small cuts and bruises. Police say the van was coming back from a medical help camp at Busita Playground. The team had been treating sick people in Bunyangabu district.

Patrick Ruhweza works as secretary at the university and told reporters who died. Gerald Muhumuza was a trained nurse who worked at the school. James Kato helped with support duties at the university. Meddy Tusime drove the van for the medical team. Pauson Amanya and Trust Koshaba were both nursing students learning to become healthcare workers.

Three other people got badly hurt and doctors are treating them at two hospitals. Matiya Businge, Everest Kugonza, and John Calvin Omasege are patients at Great Lakes International Hospital and Fort Portal regional referral hospital. Medical staff are watching them closely. The narrow highway has seen other serious accidents before this tragedy.
