Flames Ready to Snatch First COSAFA Cup

Malawi wants to win their first regional soccer trophy at the 2025 COSAFA Cup. Assistant coach Peter Mponda said the team plans to compete hard and bring home the championship. The Flames have played since 1997 but never won the regional tournament. Mponda believes his squad can reach the semifinals and maybe win the whole competition. The team finished their final practice session before flying to South Africa on Wednesday morning.

The coach feels good about balancing experienced players with new faces on the roster. Two players will miss the tournament due to different reasons affecting team selection. Silver Strikers midfielder Zebron Kalima cannot play because of an injury that keeps him out. Defender Washali Jaziya asked team officials to excuse him from the competition. The team still believes they have enough talent to make a strong run at the title.

Malawi faces three tough opponents during the group stage of the regional competition. The Flames play Lesotho on June 5 to start their tournament campaign. Three days later they battle Namibia before facing Angola on June 10. The team hopes to advance past the group stage and continue toward their championship goal.
