Zimbabwe Launches Road Maintenance Program, Adds New Equipment.
Zimbabwe's government unveiled new tractors and equipment on Tuesday to restart road maintenance units across the country. Transport Minister Felix Mhona led the launch in Harare alongside other officials.
The program aims to maintain roads built under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2. The Ministry of Transport plans to set up 180 maintenance units nationwide.
"We started this project to rehabilitate and maintain our roads," Mhona said at the launch. "Cabinet directed us to revive all Road Maintenance Units."
ZINARA, the national roads agency, secured two million liters of fuel to help local authorities with road projects. The government also bought road marking machines to improve night visibility.
Plans include building asphalt plants in each province. Bulawayo and Harare have already received their plants, reducing the need for imported materials.
Tawanda Karikoga, who heads the Parliamentary Transport Committee, said the new tractors should improve road safety. HASST Zimbabwe supplied the equipment. Its managing director, Walter Chigwada, praised the government's support for local companies.
The initiative forms part of Zimbabwe's plan to upgrade its infrastructure. Officials see better roads as essential for the country's goal of reaching upper-middle-income status by 2030.
