Govt Pushes Ahead with Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway Upgrade

Zimbabwe starts major work on the road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls after years of delays. The government sent five different building companies to fix different parts of the highway. Deputy Transport Minister Joshua Sacco says the road carries heavy traffic from tourists coming from South Africa. The route takes visitors straight to Victoria Falls and needs urgent repairs. Workers have already begun construction across multiple sections.

ZINARA held its yearly meeting and shared good news about money coming into the agency. The road authority collected 8.9 billion ZiG dollars during 2024 and gave out 4 billion to local councils. Revenue jumped up 36 percent compared to the previous year. Parliament members praised ZINARA for helping rural and city councils fix their roads. The agency keeps getting stronger at supporting infrastructure projects around the country.

Equipment shortages slow down road repairs across Zimbabwe according to ZINARA boss Nkosinathi Ncube. Many councils lack proper machines and tools needed for construction work. The agency wants to help local authorities buy better equipment for faster repairs. Rural areas especially struggle with old machinery that breaks down often. ZINARA plans to watch more closely how councils spend the money they receive.

The Bulawayo to Victoria Falls highway carries thousands of tourists every month heading to the famous waterfalls. Traffic from South Africa uses this route as the main path to reach Zimbabwe's top attraction. Poor road conditions have frustrated drivers and hurt the tourism industry for many years. Better roads will bring more visitors and help the economy grow. The government sees infrastructure as key to reaching development goals for 2030.
