Guvamatanga's phone call silences MP Energy Mutodi

ZANU PF legislator Energy Mutodi withdrew corruption accusations against Finance Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga after initially claiming the official demanded kickbacks from government contractors. The Budget and Finance committee chairman had alleged that Guvamatanga collected between 5 percent and 10 percent from Treasury payments and accumulated more than $1 billion through such schemes. Mutodi posted the claims on social media before retracting them.

The lawmaker admitted he lacked evidence to support his statements and apologized for damaging Guvamatanga's reputation. Mutodi deleted the social media posts and acknowledged that proving the allegations would be impossible. The parliamentarian must formally withdraw his remarks before the legislature on Thursday after they were recorded in the official parliamentary journal. Mutodi has previously made unsubstantiated claims that he later retracted.
