Harare City Contracts Geo Pomona for Waste Collection

The government has given Geo Pomona Waste Management a sweet deal to pick up trash in the capital. This contract will cost the broke Harare City Council a whopping US$9 million annually!

Harare City Council has long struggled to collect garbage in the city center and residential areas. Things got so bad that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had to step in and declare it a national disaster. Because of all the uncollected waste, people were getting sick with nasty diseases like cholera and typhoid.

Dilesh Nguwaya, the big boss at Geo Pomona, said earlier this year that his company would be scooping up 650 tonnes of garbage daily for US$40 per tonne. They will use all that waste to make electricity for the country. Nguwaya claims that the prices they agreed on with Harare are lower than those in Europe.

Daniel Garwe, the minister in charge of local government and public works, held a press conference with Harare's mayor, Jacob Mafume. Garwe said he believes Geo Pomona has what it takes to clean up the capital. He explained that the city has been facing money troubles, which have made it hard for them to provide essential services like water, sanitation, and waste collection.
