Harare clamps 40K cars, cracks down on chaos

Harare's city council clamped down on over forty thousand vehicles and impounded more than twenty-one thousand others in a major parking enforcement push last year. City Chamber Secretary Warren Chiwawa released the data, showing that on each operational weekday, teams immobilized about one hundred thirty-six cars and seized seventy-two others. The campaign also targeted businesses and street vendors, resulting in thousands of shop license fines, business closures, and vendor arrests.

Chiwawa stated the broad crackdown aimed to restore general order across the city. He claimed the effort has increased compliance from both businesses and transport operators, fostering a more organized environment. The program also provided a revenue boost for the council through fines and fees, though no specific financial totals were shared.
