HBO renews Last of Us for season 3

HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season just before season 2 starts airing this Sunday. Fans expected this news since creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann mentioned needing three or four seasons to tell the complete story from The Last of Us Part II game. We'll learn if a fourth season becomes necessary after seeing how much of the game story fits into season 2. HBO executives seem ready to support whatever the creative team needs.

Francesca Orsi from HBO praised the second season as an outstanding achievement. Neil Druckmann thanked fans for their support and credited his partnership with Craig Mazin for the show's success. Mazin mentioned that season 2 exceeded their goals, thanks to HBO's collaboration and the cast's excellent work. The team feels excited about continuing the story into a third season.

Mazin previously stated that he refuses to create content beyond what exists in the games. This means if the game story finishes in three seasons, the show will end there as well. A fourth season would happen only if necessary to complete the existing game narrative faithfully. The entire production team remains committed to staying true to the source material that fans love.
