Music publishers work along with record labels and this provides access to artists who may be looking for songs. But an unknown songwriter may not have a chance to pitch their song to an artist. To do so a songwriter can pitch demo songs to a music publisher.

Once a music publisher likes a demo recorded by a songwriter they will take it to a record label and see if they like it. From there a record label will look at their stable and see who the song fits perfectly.

Some songs may have a different style and may need a different singer hence those songs will be given to an appropriate artist. If not then the song will be written off as trash and possibly deleted.

The best workaround for any songwriter is to sign with a music publisher this way they will be regularly informed when a artist is looking for songs. Furthermore, a songwriter will be more efficient in the long run.

The downside of not signing to a music publishing company is that a music publisher may only deal with songwriters whom they are affiliated with. All the other songwriters will be overlooked until they sign a music publishing deal with them specifically.

In addition some music publishers only accept songs which are ready for a commercial release. This means they expect a songwriter to work with a music producer as though that song will released effectively. Rather than a quick demo which is may only have a chorus and a bridge.
