Intel wraps up Vision 2025 and gears for 18A chips

Intel just wrapped up its Vision 2025 conference in Las Vegas. Tech journalists have been poring over all the juicy details that were shared. One of the biggest pieces of news was about Intel's Core Ultra 300 "Panther Lake" processors. These bad boys will use Intel's 18A process, which is a pretty big deal.

The Panther Lake chips are set to start production later this year. Intel plans to launch them for client devices in 2025, with volume ramping up in 2026. The success of these processors is closely tied to Intel's Foundry services, which are making good progress. Intel even shared on social media that the 18A process has entered risk production. That's the last step before they can start churning out chips in massive quantities.

When Pat Gelsinger was running the show, Intel kicked off the "five nodes in four years" (5N4Y) initiative back in mid-2021. The idea was to develop five new process nodes in a really short timeframe. The 18A process is the final piece of that puzzle, and it should be ready to go later this year. Now, Lip-Bu Tan is the new CEO, ushering in a fresh era for Intel.

During the Vision 2025 conference, Kevin O'Buckley, Intel's Senior vice president of Foundry Services, explained risk production. It might sound a bit scary, but it's just an industry term. It means customers have tested the technology, and it is ready for mass production. The focus is on scaling up from small batches to huge volumes, making sure they can keep up with demand.
