Israel backs Somaliland, sparks Horn of Africa firestorm

Israel just recognized Somaliland, and everyone is losing their minds. The Economic Freedom Fighters in South Africa blasted the move, calling it a dangerous power grab by Israel to undermine Somalia and secure a foothold in the Horn of Africa. They linked it directly to the Gaza conflict, claiming Israel wants a place to resettle Palestinians and to counter nations opposing its policies. This makes Israel the first country to formally acknowledge the breakaway region, which declared independence from Somalia back in 1991.

The backlash was instant and huge. Somalia's government condemned it as a violation of sovereignty, with the parliament calling it unlawful. A bunch of Arab, African, and Islamic states issued a joint rejection, warning of serious consequences for regional peace. The African Union and regional bloc IGAD also slammed the decision, stressing it breaks UN and AU rules on border integrity. The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting to deal with the fallout.

For Somaliland, this could mean more investment and political ties, using its strategic port of Berbera near key Red Sea shipping lanes. For Somalia and the region, it risks major instability, potentially encouraging other breakaways and drawing in rival powers like Iran or Ethiopia. The whole situation hinges on a fragile region already packed with conflict, making this diplomatic bomb a possible trigger for wider unrest.
