Joyce Banda unveils PP manifesto in Lilongwe, vowing grassroots revival for Malawi

Joyce Banda returned to lead the People's Party manifesto launch at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe. The former president presented the "Trickle-Up: Relief from the Bottom Up" platform ahead of September elections. World Bank data revealed Malawi's GDP grew just 1.8 percent while population expanded 2.6 percent during 2024. The poverty rate climbed from 70.1 percent to 75.4 percent under revised measurements. Banda described these statistics as representing broken dreams and suffering citizens.

The manifesto targets currency stabilization by addressing gaps between official and black market exchange rates. Healthcare reform proposals promise restocked hospitals with essential medications and elimination of out-of-pocket drug payments. Rural development plans feature Smart Villages with solar power, clean water access, and digital connectivity. Public-private partnerships would drive infrastructure expansion, particularly for rural electrification projects. Banda emphasized that sustainable development must originate from grassroots communities rather than top-down government approaches.
