Jubilee backs Matiang'i for 2027 race

Jubilee Party selected Fred Matiang'i as its 2027 presidential candidate on Thursday after party leaders met in Nairobi. The former interior minister was also appointed as deputy party leader and will represent Jubilee within the United Opposition coalition. Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta chaired the National Executive Committee session remotely.

Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni said that members approved Matiang'i's candidacy application and confirmed him as the party's standard bearer. The coalition includes figures such as Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Martha Karua. Former Attorney General Justin Muturi is also a participant in the opposition movement.

Party officials plan to expand operations across Kenya's 247 constituencies before the election. Leaders filled vacant positions by naming Samuel Arama as National Assembly whip and James Lomenen as Senate whip. The committee will release detailed restructuring plans within two weeks.

Matiang'i served under Kenyatta's administration before Jubilee separated from President William Ruto's government. Kioni described the selection as a fresh start for the organization.
