Judge Lets Drake Dig Into UMG Docs in Kendrick Lawsuit

Drake just won a step forward in his legal fight with Universal Music Group about the Kendrick Lamar song "Not Like Us." Judge Jeanette Vargas helped Drake by saying he could ask for papers and talk to company leaders. This matters because Universal wanted to stop Drake from getting these things. Drake asked for all deals between Kendrick and Universal, plus pay details for big bosses like CEO John Janick. Both sides will dig for facts as the case moves ahead, not just Drake.

Drake's lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, is happy about this win. He said they could finally see what Universal had tried to keep hidden. The music company has yet to say anything back when asked. They sent a letter last month trying to block Drake because they thought his requests would cost them lots of time and money. Drake wants to know about contracts and how bosses have earned extra cash at Interscope for the past five years.

Universal has fought back hard since January, when Drake first sued them. Last month, they asked the court to throw out the case completely. They claimed Drake only sued because he lost a rap battle and felt hurt about it. The judge has set June 30 as the day to hear more about possibly ending the case. Drake believes Universal hurt his name by letting Kendrick call him bad things in music.

Drake started this fight by saying Universal spread lies that he likes children wrongly. His team argues Universal knew the words and video pictures from "Not Like Us" were false but sold them anyway for money. Drake also thinks Universal worked with Spotify to make fake streaming numbers for the song. Both companies said this never happened. Earlier this year, Universal tried to stop Drake from asking questions before the case even started in Texas.

The case shows how much bad blood exists between these music giants. Drake wants justice for what he sees as attacks on his name. Universal claims he needs to accept defeat like a real rapper would. The truth might come out as more papers become public through this court process. Fans watch closely as two powerhouses of music clash over words in songs and business practices behind the scenes.
